 The Trust for Public Land (TPL), the National Park Service (NPS), the State Coastal Conservancy, and the Pacifica Land Trust are pleased to announce the protection of Mori Point, a spectacular coastal headland in the city of Pacifica. The highly visible Mori Point, with its sweeping views of the ocean, Pedro Point Headlands, and Montara Mountain, also has tremendous recreational value. It links Pacifica's Beach Promenade Trail to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's Sweeney Ridge, and also provides an important link to the California |
Coastal Trail. Mori Point is the newest addition to the National Park Service's Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), the nation's first, largest, and most visited urban park. For nearly 20 years, Mori Point was repeatedly threatened by development proposals, but each time Pacificans fought to protect this local landmark. In September 2000, the fate of Mori Point was resolved once and for all when TPL successfully outbid developers and acquired the 105-acre property at a real estate auction. TPL used funds from private donors, the Pacifica Land Trust and its own capital to purchase the property. The state Coastal Conservancy and federal Land and Water Conservation Fund provided public funding for the NPS purchase of the property from the TPL. |
