More Information about Sweeney Ridge

Many residents in San Bruno, Millbrae, and other nearby communities are familiar with the scenic GGNRA Sweeney Ridge Trail, which starts at the end of Sneath Lane in San Bruno. It may surprise some of these trail users that the City of Pacifica owns 9.2 acres of land which borders the entrance to this scenic trail. This land is currently for sale with the clear intention of developing between 9 and 81 luxury homes on a site which also happens to be contiguous to the San Andreas Lake watershed, and GGNRA property

For those people who use this trail, it is quite obvious that any development on this site poses a number of detrimental issues particularly the threat to the water quality of nearby San Andreas Lake. Indeed, an existing waterway which feeds the lake is within 100 feet of the development site! Furthermore, due to the natural slope of the land, all of the water runoff from the property is directed straight into the water way. There are also many other ecological, environmental, wildlife, and constructability concerns, due to the steep slope, and impact on the existing hydrological system. In addition, this area serves as a unique gateway into the GGNRA and watershed lands, with incredible views of scenic San Andreas Lake.

The City of Pacifica is selling the property because they are really in need of money. Fortunately, there is a win-win situation for everyone At the request of several San Bruno residents, The Pacifica Land Trust has submitted a formal proposal to the City of Pacifica whereby they would pay the City fair market value for the property, with the clear intention of preserving and protecting it forever. Both the GGNRA and the San Francisco Water District have expressed interest in managing the property, if the PLT can acquire it.

We are very fortunate to have a situation where such a unique and scenic open space can be saved, while at the same time, still protecting the rights of the property owner. I ask everyone who deeply cares about protecting our water quality, and preserving such a valuable open space. to write a letter or e-mail to the City of Pacifica, urging them to work with the Pacifica Land Trust in seeking to preserve this beautiful and extremely important open space. It would also be very helpful to send a letter to the San Bruno City Council, Congressman Tom Lantos, State Senator Jackie Speier, Assemblyman Lou Papan, the GGNRA, and the San Francisco Water District.
