Update on Sweeney Ridge Open Space Land Sale

March 12, 2001
On February 26, 2001, the Pacifica City Council voted to accept Pacifica Land Trust's (PLT) Proposal to purchase the 9 acre parcel of land located here at the trail head of Sweeney Ridge. PLT's Proposal was accepted over three other bids, placed by private housing developers. The decision made by the City of Pacifica is significant showing of its goodwill in helping to maintain Sweeney Ridge an open space for all to enjoy. But this is only a first important step toward the effort to keep development of homes from occurring on this land.

The agreed upon amount for the sale of this property to PLT is to be determined upon a thorough appraisal. The City of Pacifica has granted approximately 1 year to PLT to gather the funding needed to complete the purchase of the land. PLT in fact is helping to broker this purchase on behalf of our community and it will need help from all of us who use and enjoy this beautiful trail. PLT will seek the majority of funding for the purchase from

other non-profit land trusts and land conservancies but, in that pursuit, PLT must demonstrate to potential funders that our community strongly supports PLT in this venture. Simply put, for all its good intentions, PLT can not save this land without our help.

Recently, Skyline City College sold some 23 acres of open space around the college campus, to a private developer. An estimated 180 single-family homes will be built. The same result can occur in our efforts to save Sweeney Ridge if we do not support the PLT.
